Which Good Quality Towing Bar Is Good For SUV With Blue Ox Base Plates Getting Pulled Behind RV?

Published 06/03/2026

Question:

I have Blue Ox base plates on my SUV but don’t have a tow bar yet. Is the Ultra-Fab 8,000 lb tow bar enough, or should I buy the 12,000 lb model?

Hi Brenda! Since you already have Blue Ox base plates, you’d be choosing between the Ultra-Fab # UF55XR with an 8,000 lb rating and the Ultra-Fab # UF95XR with a 12,000 lb rating. These are specifically designed to be used with Blue Ox plates.

The best choice depends on the actual loaded weight of your SUV. If your SUV is comfortably under 8,000 lbs when it’s loaded the way you travel, # UF55XR would be a good fit. If it’s a larger SUV, or you expect to tow something heavier later, # UF95XR gives you more capacity to work with.

I’d also check the towing capacity of your motorhome hitch, because the setup is only as strong as the lowest-rated component. If you need help with wiring, braking, or figuring out whether your SUV is flat towable, send me the year, make, model, and trim and I’ll help you sort it out, Brenda.
