Is There A Wide Safety Pin For Wide Trailer Coupler Latch?

Updated 05/27/2026 | Published 05/18/2026

Question:

My trailer coupler has a 1/4" hole for the safety pin, but the latch area looks wider than most of the small pins I’ve seen locally. Is the # RD22GR the longer option?

Hey Terry! You’re looking at the right one if you need the longer span. The RV Designer Safety Lock Pin # RD22GR has a 1/4" diameter pin and a 3-1/2" usable length, so it’s the better fit between these two RV Designer pins when the coupler latch area is wider.

The shorter RV Designer Safety Lock Pin # RD72GR is also a 1/4" diameter pin, but it has a 2-1/2" usable length. That one works well for more standard-width coupler latch areas, while the # RD22GR gives you that extra inch of length on some of those wider coupler latches.

Terry, I’d measure from the outside of one latch tab to the outside of the other. As long as that measurement is within the usable length and the hole is 1/4", you’ll be in good shape.

Do you need overall width? It looks like it's about 3 inches for the latch width where pin goes. But it's a lot wider on the whole coupler.

@Terry That's exactly the info we needed. You'll want the bigger 3-1/2" span part # RD22GR. You'll be all set!
