Do I Need Snap Pin On Coupler Of Boat Trailer To Keep Latch From Opening?

Updated 05/27/2026 | Published 05/18/2026

Question:

I lost the snap pin that keeps my boat trailer coupler latch from popping up. I don’t need a locking one, just something quick to put in before towing. Is RD72GR enough for that?

Hey Monica! Yes, the RV Designer Safety Lock Pin # RD72GR is made for exactly that kind of simple coupler-latch security. It’s a 1/4" diameter snapper-style safety pin with a 2-1/2" usable length, and it’s designed to help keep the coupler securely latched during transit.

This is not a theft-deterrent lock, so it won’t replace a keyed coupler lock if you’re trying to secure the trailer while parked. But for towing, it gives you that quick pin-and-clip style retention so the latch has a safety pin through it instead of being left open or relying only on the latch mechanism.

Is this for a standard straight-tongue boat trailer coupler, or one of the wider surge-brake actuator couplers? Some boat trailers have the EZ latch or another one which is a bit wider that may need the 3-1/2" span like with # RD22GR.
