Should I Run 2 24V In Parallel Or Series For 48V In Off-Grid Camper Van Build?

Question:

I’m planning a full off-grid van build. Why would I go with a 48V inverter like VN95VR instead of 24V like VN44RR? I'm trying to decide how to wire my 2 24v lithium batteries. thanks!

Hey Kevin, this really comes down to how you want to wire those two batteries.

With two 24V 200Ah batteries, you’ve got two solid options. If you wire them in parallel, you’ll stay at 24V but double your capacity to 400Ah, which pairs well with an inverter like # VN44RR. That setup is simpler and gives you more runtime at that voltage.

If you wire them in series, you’ll have a 48V 200Ah system, which is what something like the # VN95VR is designed for. You’re not losing any total energy doing this - both setups end up around 9,600 watt-hours - you’re just delivering that power at a higher voltage.

Where 48V really stands out is efficiency. You’ll have lower current, smaller wiring, and better performance as loads get heavier or if you expand later. That’s why it’s typically used for larger off-grid systems.

If you’re keeping things more moderate and want to keep it simple, the 24V setup with the # VN44RR is a great fit. If you’re planning to grow the system or run bigger loads, 48V with the # VN95VR is the stronger long-term move.
