Which Victron Inverter Charger Is Best For Off-Grid Camper Van Build?

Updated 04/22/2026 | Published 04/21/2026

Question:

I’m building out a van and trying to keep things simple. Do I really need one of those big inverter/chargers like VN42VR, or can I just use something like VN55ZR?

Hey Sam! This is a perfect example of where simpler is often better, especially in a van build.

If you’re running a 12V system, the Victron Phoenix 1,000w 12v inverter # VN55ZR is a great, straightforward option. If you’re going 24V for efficiency, then the # VN44RR 24V is the match. Both give you clean AC power without needing to tie into a full RV-style electrical system.

You’d only step up to something like the 2,400w Victron Quattro II # VN42VR 12V or 2,400w # VN58ZR 24V if you want built-in charging, automatic switching between shore power and battery, and full system integration.

And if you were planning a large, expandable setup, the # VN95VR 48V would be the top end - but that’s more than most van builds need.

Most people start simple and expand later, so you’re on the right track. If you plan to switch back and forth between shore/generator power and off-grid battery power, I highly recommend the 2,400w 12v or 24v option as those have built-in chargers and automatic transfer switch which makes things super easy!

What voltage are you planning for your battery bank, and what’s the heaviest thing you want to run?

Oh okay, didn't know there were that many options. I just have 2 12v batteries to run LED lights, 12v water pump for my sink, and a fan. I only run AC or Heat when using my generator.

@Sam Oh okay thanks for the info. Yes in that case just go with the 12v # VN55ZR. That will do everything you need :)
