Will Axle Require Bump Stops After Over-Under Conversion Kit Installation

Updated 04/24/2026 | Published 04/17/2026

Question:

On my coyote lite kz travel trailer Im looking to swap leaf springs from under axle to over axle for more ground clearance. Would axle bump stops be need for the event of hitting the axle to the frame of the travel trailer

Hey Donald! If you flip the axle using the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-384-00 you will not need to add bump stops. The frame will actually be further away from the axle, which is where that additional clearance comes from. This kit is designed for 2-3/8" diameter axles. If you have 3" axles you need # K71-385-00 instead.

Where are you headed once you increase the clearance on your KZ Coyote Lite? If you have any additional questions feel free to reach out in the comments below.

Used a set of these to do exactly what Donald is thinking about. Ended up with a 4.5 inch lift which was perfect for my Colman trailer. Worst part was rounding up enough jack stands to properly support the trailer while dropping the axle. As recommended I would definitely weld the new brackets on as opposed to just relying on the U-bolts. If you can’t do it, bolt it on and take it to someone who can, especially if you’re going off road.

You will not need bump stops. As Robin mentioned, the axle will be even further away from the frame than it was before. I used this kit, plus 1" blocks (and had to buy longer U-bolts), and was able to go from the scary 12" wheels and tires, to 14" wheels and better quality tires. I had to use the 1" blocks to keep the tires from rubbing the fender wells on rough roads. Buying this kit was the best thing I did for my pop-up. The piece of mind you get on the aspect of safety is worth a million! Now I travel down the highway with a smile on my face, instead of a constant worried grimace.
