Do Trailer Hitch Ball Mounts Need Ball Torqued Every So Often?

Updated 03/16/2026 | Published 03/09/2026

Question:

Hello, I just purchased a hitch ball that requires 250 ft-lbs of torque when installing it on my ball mount. My question is - will I need to re-torque it periodically, or does it only require torquing at initial installation then never thereafter? If regular re-torquing is required, what is a good frequency to do so e.g. X number of miles driven, Y times per year, etc? Thank you very much! Dean

Hey Dean, those trailer balls can be tricky to torque down.

You will not need to torque it down again after the initial torquing. It will stay put! If you don't have a big enough wrench, I recommend going to a trailer shop or sometimes even a hardware store as they can usually help you torque it down so you don't have to buy any big tools.

We do sell pre-torqued options like 2" ball mount for 2" receivers # e67DR if you ever need another one in the future! What are you planning on towing?

Hi Andrew, Thank you very much for the advice! I was somewhat worried that perhaps the ball may loosen over time due to vibrations etc while driving, but it sounds like that's not a concern. I do have a torque wrench that goes up to 250 ft-lbs, but I don't have a 1 1/2" extra-deep socket, so I called a local trailer shop and they said they'd torque it down for $10. Can't go wrong with that! I've got a pretty lightweight trailer to tow -- 2025 Prolite Evasion. Thanks again, Dean

@Dean Awesome, glad you got it figured out! And that's a neat trailer there, I'm not extremely familiar with them but they look really nice!
