Can Thawing and Refreezing Snow Damage Rails on Pace Edwards UltraGroove

Updated 03/06/2026 | Published 03/04/2026

Question:

I like the videos you folks do for the products you sell. They are aways well done. Living in the northeast my biggest concern is water, snow and ice getting into the extruded aluminum tee slots and freezing up and cracking the aluminum. I know there are a few drains front and back but it doesnt seem that they would be sufficient in very cold weather when things warm enough in the day to turn to slush and then freeze up again. What information do you have about this?

Hi Michael, welcome back! If water ends up trapped in the UltraGroove # PE67CV rails it is possible it could warp or damage the rails if they experience a lot of thawing and refreezing. This typically isn't an issue, especially if you make sure your drains are working and don't get clogged, but it is certainly possible.

If you want the tracks to mount accessories or a rack there isn't a good way around this aside from clearing the snow/slush and checking on the drains in those conditions. Otherwise, you can get a cover like the JackRabbit # PE54UV without the T-slot rails so you don't have to worry about it.

What will you be mounting on the UltraGroove?

Thanks for the prompt reply Robin. To answer your question, I will not be mounting anything to it. I don't actually own one. I am shopping for a new bed cover. At this point, if I had to choose, I would go with the other one that has the bearings. It seems better made. Thanks again.

@Michael you're welcome. I would definitely forgo the T-slot rails then and get the JackRabbit # PE54UV. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to reach out.

I live in Montana and mounted the UltraGroove on my truck in November, and I haven't had any issues. With or without the drain tubes hooked up, the water will run out of the T-rail grooves while it's still water, and there shouldn't be an excess left in the grooves to freeze. Overall I love the cover - looks great and very functional. - Joe P
