Is It Worth Upgrading Roof Vent To Powered Fan Vent In 2020 Grand Design Imagine?

Updated 02/26/2026 | Published 02/25/2026

Question:

We’re replacing a cracked vent lid on our 2020 Grand Design Imagine. Since we’re already pulling it off, I’m wondering if it’s worth upgrading to a fan instead of just replacing the lid. We don’t have one now.

Hey Cheryl, if you’re already messing with the vent, this is a great time to upgrade since you were wanting one with a fan. The addition of the fan is a huge benefit for any camper.

Both versions fit the standard 14 inch x 14 inch opening and give you four fan speeds with up to 400 CFM of airflow. That means better odor control, better moisture control, and the ability to aim airflow toward your living space or bed - which you just can’t do with a standard non-fan vent.

The white lid # MA96WV matches most factory roofs, while the smoke lid # MA36WV gives you a tinted look. Inside, they’re identical.

Are you planning to install it yourself, or have a shop handle the swap? And do you know if that was the original vent? A lot of Grand Design units have the fan in there from the factory.

Thanks Andrew. It’s definitely just a basic crank vent now - no fan. I’m comfortable doing the swap myself, but I’m a little nervous about sealing everything correctly on the roof. don't want any leaks! Is that the hardest part?

@Cheryl Welcome back Cheryl. The wiring is usually very straightforward since it just uses a power and a ground wire. If you don't have power there yet, then you'd need to run some 12v wiring from your DC fuse box / power center. I also recommend getting a kit like Roof Vent Installation Kit - Sealant, Butyl Tape, Screws # 344270KITW to keep everything sealed up properly.
