Upgrading Factory Grip Tape On 2020 Keystone Cougar 29BHS With Lippert 3-Step

Updated 02/12/2026 | Published 02/11/2026

Question:

2020 Keystone Cougar 29BHS. The factory grip strips are okay, but the rest of the step still feels slick when it rains. What should I do? Add more tape? lol that seems janky though.

Hi Jeremy - that’s a really common frustration.

The factory tread strips only cover the very front portion of the step, so when it’s wet, most of your foot is still landing on smooth aluminum. The cheapest solution is to just add more grip tape like # CAM25401.

That said, I strongly recommend upgrading to a weather proof cover that will make the entire step more grippy, while protecting your steps from the elements / sun.

First thing to verify is your tread width. Open the SolidSteps and measure the flat metal stepping surface from left edge to right edge.

If it measures:
• 24 inches wide, go with # PS87UR 3-step
• 20 inches wide, go with # PS39UR 3-step

Your Cougar most commonly came with Lippert SolidSteps 3-step, but it’s worth confirming they haven’t been swapped out. If they aren't the original Lipperts, you'll need a different PopStep kit, so just let me know what you have! I'm here to help :).

I added more grip tape to mine and it peeled after one hot summer. Wish I would’ve just done covers from the start.

@Darren Thanks for sharing, Darren! Extra tape works for some, but if in an area with high heat and moisture, it starts lifting.
