Will PopStep Camper Step Covers Freeze In Winter And Get Slick?

Updated 02/12/2026 | Published 02/11/2026

Question:

We camp in colder weather. Do these freeze up and get slick in the winter? My old carpet ones would get slick after ice freezes into the carpet. thx

Hey Greg, good question!

Carpet-style rugs absorb moisture, which can freeze and make them stiff or slick. PopStep covers are flexible PVC, so they don’t absorb water. If ice builds up, you can easily clean it off or just remove the cover, flex it to crack the ice loose, and snap it back on.

Whether you’re using # PS87UR 24 inch wide 3-step, # PS27UR 24 inch wide 2-step, # PS39UR 20 inch wide 3-step, or # PS99UR 20 inch wide 2-step, the material construction is the same.

Do you do much winter camping? I never really have. Not sure if I could brave it out in the cold! I'm more of a spring/fall camper.

Yeah we do quite a bit of winter camping actually. Mostly in Missouri and Arkansas. I just didn’t want something that turns into an ice rink when it’s 25 degrees out.

@Greg Nice! Yeah, winter camping takes commitment. The nice part with these is they don’t soak up water like carpet, so you don’t get that frozen sponge effect. If ice forms on top, it’ll be on the surface instead of embedded, and you can flex the cover to break it loose pretty easily. Missouri winters can get sneaky cold too; that's actually where we are based out of!
