Could SmartPlug 50 Amp Female Plug Wire to 30 Amp Wire
Updated 02/23/2026 | Published 02/10/2026 >
Question:
I have a 2026 Airstream International with Soft Start on 2 A/Cs with a 50amp Smart Plug set up. With soft start you dont need 50 amp to get going with your A/Cs, 30 amps is plenty. I hate lugging that heavy 50amp power cable around. Ive spoken with Smart Plug people out in Seattle, and they dont make a Smart Plug 50amp to 30amp adapter for a regular hookup to a 30amp cable. They do make a marine version which requires you to twist on to whatever you are plugging into at the marina well that doesnt help me. Can you take this Bf-50 female Smart Plug and cut the wires from the attached 50-amp head photo and make the ideal set up with a 50amp Smart Plug end and a 30amp on the other to connect to a regular 30amp cable? Hey Bernie, it sounds like you are asking if a 30 amp cable could be wired to the SmartPlug Connector Plug Assembly for RV Power Cords - 50 Amp Female # SM36FR that you referenced. Yes you could do that or if you wanted to wire it to a 30 amp dog bone you could do that as well. You are one of several people looking for a 30 amp solution for the SmartPlugs though so hopefully they come out with something sooner.

You basically need to do what is done in a 30amp male to 50amp female dog bone, jump from the Red (L1) hot leg to the Black (L2) hot leg. Unfortunately, I do not believe there is enough room in the SmartPlug connector to use the proper sized jumper wire for this. One possible option would be to make the connection in a plastic waterproof junction box. Inside the junction box use a din-rail terminal block with jumpers to make the connections and use a jumper between the L1 and L2 terminals. Take a 30amp cable and cut the female connector off. Then run the 30amp cable into the junction box through a waterproof cable gland and connect to the Red, White and Green terminals. Use about a 3-foot 50amp cable with a Smartplug 50amp female connector wired to it, run that into the other side of the junction box, also through a waterproof cable gland. Connect that end to the Red, Black, White and Green terminals. The other option would be converting the line coming into your camper and to the circuit panel to 30amp and jump the L1 to L2 on the panel

Hi Bernie Like you I changed my 34 foot Airstream Classic to a Smart plug system several years ago due to the cord getting frayed and also as an upgrade. Like you that 30 ft Smartplug cord is a brute to carry and find a place to store. My solution was to buy a 15 ft 50 amp cord on Amazon, chop off the female end and buy a Smartplug female receptacle to attach to the 15 ft. cord. Not cheap! the smart plug receptacle is $150 USD. However problem solved.

Yes it can be done within the SM36FR plug. I actually have two Smart Plug 50 amp receptacles on my RV one at the front corner and one at the rear. The SM36FR comes with two cord strain reliefs to go onto your cable of choice. I used the smaller of the two and some 3M 5200 in black because I went a step farther in my cable weight reduction. I used a 20 amp extension cord for driveway mooch docking where the family host may only have a 15 amp receptacle at the garage. You can do this with a 30 amp cable as well and you should not need the 3M 5200. As mentioned you will need to jumper or link L1 and L2 inside of the SM36FR. I cut a few extra inches from my cable to get the perfect matching jumper. There is room to accomplish this. You will need to be cautious about running the microwave and AC at the same time, becoming your own EMS energy management system. I recommend you do not use the electric element in your water heater if so equipped, unless you might remember to only use it at night when AC needs are quite reduced. I also have a Victron Quattro-II and 600 amp hours of Lithium, with CerboGX so I can select not to allow more than 10 amps to enter via my mooch cable. None of this is needed with your idea for the 30 amp cable. You just have to realize your limitations of running one leg of 30 amps in place of running two legs of 50 amp service. It is not merely a 20 amp reduction. In its simplest explanation you are giving up 100 amps of service at 50 amps times 2 to run on 30 amps times 1. Basically you are cutting 70 amps of service. you are also circumventing any engineering within your RV to distribute loads between L1 and L2 by combining all loads to L1 and adding L2. Liability may be the very reason Smart Plug does not make what you are asking for. However, if you are willing to accept the responsibility this is how you can accomplish the weight reduction in your cable. Even in Airstream the 50 amp service usually means there are two AC's. This 30 amp set up will not run two AC's. I also use my 20 amp cable for long term storage to keep batteries topped. I keep my 50 amp cable for times it is warranted. And I keep it stored to keep it new.

Jameson I wired my 30 amp cable with the 50 amp Smart Plug head. It should work seeing that I have soft start on both A/Cs. It this works it alleviates hauling the cumbersome 50 amp cable.

Jameson, Is there anyway you can impress upon Smart Plug to start making an adapter like i mentioned. I think there is a big movement for something like this but it won't get any headway without companies like you and Airstream making a push towards. V/r Bernie
