Hey, Nick!

Happy to help out. The best and easiest kayak rack to use with a load assist is the Thule Hullavator Pro # TH898. One big advantage is that everything is built into the carrier itself, here are no extra parts to remove or store. Personally, I’m not a fan of other load-assist options like the Malone DownLoader # MPG114MD-351XL, since you have to store the Telos legs inside your vehicle while traveling. That’s especially inconvenient if you’re working with a smaller vehicle.

I also did some research on the best crossbars to pair with the Hullavator. This carrier requires a specific amount of clearance to function properly, and the Yakima JetStream bars are the best option. The main reason is that the mounting channel on the underside of the bars runs the full length, which makes it much easier to achieve the clearance you need. Other brands keep their channels much shorter and can make things tricky.

For a 2018 Toyota Prius Prime, we typically recommend 50" crossbars, but in this case I’d suggest going with the 60" bars instead. The Hullavator needs about 4–8" of bar overhang past the towers, and with the shorter bars, you simply won’t have enough clearance, even if you shift the bars slightly to one side.

For the roof rack you will need:
Yakima JetStream Crossbars 60" long part # Y00426 (black) or part # Y00429 (silver)
Yakima BaseLine Towers part # Y28TR
Yakima BaseLine BaseClip Fit Kit part # Y06123 (for the front bar)
Yakima BaseLine BaseClip Fit Kit part # Y06169 (for the rear bar)

A little wordy but wanted to make sure I explained everything properly. Have you carried any gear on the roof before or is this your first venture with a roof rack?

I have 2 Hullivators, just replaced my old set. I used them on my Jeep Cherokee for several years. I bought a new 2024 GMC Canyon Denali and went with GMC accessory kayak racks which work great. We like the assist lift because we have heavy ocean (sit on top) kayaks. So loading ang unloading they are at chest height.

I use the Thule Hullivator on a Toyota Highlander. Im only 5'4" and not a strong person. The Hullivator lowers down to about just above my waste. I can get my 14'6" Wilderness kayak on by myself and once strapped down I only have to bend down a little to squeeze the release to let the hullivator lift the load back up. On a Prius you may be bending over a lot more. It may still be you best option rather than a trailer. I would check YouTube to view as many videos as you can on the hullivator or any other types of racks.

@GinnyH Thanks for your input, Ginny. I would say I'm pretty tall but I know for sure I would want to always be using a load assist like the Hullivator than lifting a kayak over my head.

I have a 2022 F150. I went with the Yakima JetStream Crossbars and the Thule Hullavator Pro. First off, the Hullavator rack is Great! I'm only 5'7" and could not even begin to put a Kayak on top of my truck without a ladder. The Hullavator made it it possible. Very easy to lower the rack, put the kayak in it and lift it up very easily. The Yakima Jetstreams do not work with the included mounting brackets that come with the Hullavator. the crossbar is too big for the brackets to wrap around the it. For a direct bolt up fit you need to go with the square crossbars, not the elliptical one. I didn't care about this and wanted the Jetstream bars so they weren't as noisy on the freeway, so I just figured out were the rack needed to go on the cross bar, marked it, then drilled a couple holes through both the rack bracket and crossbar. Then with just a couple bolts securely mounted the rack to the crossbar. I would recommend the Hullavator 100%

I have a set on my 2020 suburban with yakima hd bars. Fitting these onto the hd bars was a small challenge but doable. These lift assists are a lifesaver for a tall vehicle, totally worth the money, super easy to secure the kayak to the rack. Would highly recommend these.

I have Hullavator Pros on my 2016 Volvo XC70. Love the lift assist! The Hullavator cradles are best suited for hard fiberglass kayaks, but they’re not so great for HDPE kayaks like my 14’ Prijon Cruiser. The problem is bottom-denting at the pressure points. These softer HDPE boats are better carried resting on their sides in J-bars. So I removed the cradles, which are just bolted into the T-slot atop each Hullavator, and replaced them with Thule J-bars that I attached in the same manner. Problem solved! I can swap-in the cradles pretty quickly whenever I need to, but thank goodness for J-bars!

@GeoK I never thought about swapping out the cradles on the Hullavator and put a J style rack on it instead. I'm sure Thule would say "no way" but that is a really awesome solution especially in your case. That's pretty cool, Geo!
