Will The MB Sturgis Sturgi-Stay T-Fitting w/ Hose Leak If The External Tank is Disconnected

Updated 01/12/2026 | Published 12/19/2025

Question:

When the hose to the external tank is disconnected from an external tank are you still able to use the house tank without worry of it leaking out the unconnected hose? I would assume so, but do not like just assuming....

Hey, Jeffrey!

Couldn't agree more, it's always safe to ask just to make sure. In this case you are correct! If you don't have an external tank hooked up to the MB Sturgis Sturgi-Stay part # 103614-MBS, you won't have any leaking if you want to use the main tanks on the trailer.

What kind of trailer do you have?

I bought the 10 foot version of the hose that comes with this kit, and it leaks propane at the end when not connected to another bottle of propane. Is the one I received defective?

@Jeff This may be a silly question but I just want to make sure. Is the propane tank valve fully closed when you disconnect the hose?

@GwendolynY Yes, the cylinders are all closed when disconnecting. Once the hose that goes to the secondary tank is disconnected from the 2nd tank, and I then turn the main to open, propane starts coming out the end of the hose that connects to the 2nd tank.

@Jeff There is a back-check built into those hoses but it's not a 100% fail safe if you leave it connected to the set up without a tank on the other end. I'd recommend disconnecting at the port at the T and re-screwing in the cap it has.
