Updated 12/11/2025 | Published 12/10/2025

Question:

Can I strap down a small dresser or tool chest to this rack? Sometimes I need to haul awkward stuff that won’t fit in my Jeep. has 2 inch hitch already. thanks.

Alan, absolutely! The Benton Basic Hitch Modular Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches # B42FR is great for awkward loads as it is a very versatile rack setup. You can strap a small dresser or cabinet across the sliding bars (left and right crossbars), or use the fixed front/rear bars if the item fits better running in that position.

Those end anchor points make tie-downs simple, and as long as you’re within the 300-lb capacity, the rack will handle it well. I do recommend checking your vehicle's owner's manual to make sure you stay within the capacity of the vehicle and hitch.

What’s the heaviest or strangest thing you’ve had to haul? If you don't have a good ratchet strap kit yet, I'd grab this nice and tidy kit with 2 straps in a bag! etrailer Ratchet Straps with Double-J Hooks and Storage Bag # e85SV.

The dresser is about 42” wide. Will that fit across the sliding bars?

@Alan Yes Alan, the 42" dresser will fit. The sliding left/right bars can be adjusted and max out to 38-5/8" center-to-center tracks, and with the overhang of the dresser, that’s plenty of support for a flat, stable tie-down. Just make sure you strap it to the end anchor points and stay under the 300-lb rating. You really wouldn't have to max the crossbars out though. I'd maybe put them about 35" apart and have a little bit of overhang on each side for better stability.
