Do I Need To Climb In Bed Of Truck To Latch And Unlatch Gen-Y Nomad Adapter On Gooseneck Ball?

Updated 12/22/2025 | Published 12/03/2025

Question:

I’m really tempted to get rid of my big fifth-wheel hitch, but I’m only 5’2” and climbing up into the truck bed every time is getting old fast. With the Gen-Y Nomad, do I still have to get up there to latch or unlatch it? Hoping not!

Maria, you'll be happy to hear that the Nomad uses an auto-latching gooseneck coupler, so once the ball makes contact, it locks itself without you holding a jaw open or climbing into the bed. To disconnect, you just pull the release cable on the Nomad and drive forward. Super simple and no bed-climbing required for mounting or dismounting.

This is one of the biggest quality-of-life improvements over a traditional 5th wheel hitch with jaws and handles. The truck bed is clear, the hitching point is low, and the latch takes care of itself.

If you want, Maria, tell me what trailer you’re pulling and I’ll verify which Nomad model fits it.

We have the # GY57ND for Lippert 1621, 1116, 1716 model pin boxes, or the # GY37ND for Lippert Rhino pin boxes. This covers the majority of the popular pin boxes, but if you happen to have something else just let me know and I'll find something for you.

That sounds way better already. Just to be clear, I don’t need to reach over the bed rails at all, right?

@Maria Correct, no reaching over the bed rails. That's where it really starts to stand out compared to fifth wheel hitches. Hitching happens automatically when you lower onto the ball, and unhooking is just pulling the release cable on the pin box. You can stay on the ground the whole time.
