Can The Air Lift Ride Control Air Helper Springs AL59501 Be Run At 0 PSI On A 2004 Dodge Dakota?

Question:

Can I drive these at 0psi? Or is 10psi the lowest minimum operating pressure? Is there an internal bump stop?

Hi Matthew!

The Air Lift Ride Control Air Helper Springs - Rear Axle # AL59501 does need to have a minimum of 5 psi. This does not have an internal jounce/bump stop and when I contacted Air Lift, they do not offer one that does offer that feature, unfortunately.

The only other air bag option for your 2004 Dodge Dakota is the Pacbrake Alpha SD Air Bag Suspension Kit - Sleeve Style - Rear Axle - 2,000 lbs # PB34VV. This one also does not include that internal bump stop and will need to have at least 10 psi, so I think the Air Lift option will be more comfortable to live with when you aren't towing.

Speaking of which, what are you towing?

Thanks for the info. I drive a 2004 v8 Dakota, and I'm towing a 13ft flatbed tandem axle trailer with up to 5000lbs plus trailer. Definitely pushing the truck limits.

@Matthew Walking along the razor's edge! (I couldn't help it, as soon as I read "pushing the truck limits" I started hearing the song) : P The 4.7 in the Dakota was always a pretty powerful engine, but I see why you wanted some support in the rear. Have you thought about a compressor so you can adjust the air pressure on the fly? The adjustability of air bags is the reason I prefer them over other enhancement options.

@LazerS Yes, I also plan for an on board compressor to adjust the airbags. Space is tight though.

@Matthew I hear that. When there is limited space, I always steer people towards the Air Lift Load Controller II Compressor System for Air Helper Springs - Single Path # AL25592. It is pretty basic, but it's reliable and compact, so I think it would be a good option for you. Plus it's also pretty inexpensive, which is nice. : )
