Connecting Trailer Wiring of Motorcycle to Trailer with 4-Way

Published 11/17/2025

Question:

Hello, I have a motorcycle with a five wire female trailer connection. The trailer I am pulling has a four wire male connector. Will the Hopkins HM47910 Work on this set up ? I have no electric brakes on the trailer so the blue wire will be not used. What would I do with the blue wire? Thank you for your time and response.

Hey Ralph, so the reason your motorcycle has a 5-way trailer wiring connector is because it has the stop lights separate from the turn signals which is not how typical trailer wiring is ran unless the trailer was designed for being towed by a motorcycle.

Since your trailer has a 4-way on it that indicates to me that it was designed to be towed by a vehicle and not a motorcycle. Your best option would be to cut off the 5-way of your motorcycle and wire the circuits of it to the Curt 4-way kit part # C59236. This will convert the wiring to a standard 4-way setup like what your trailer was designed to be towed with.

Simply using just a 5-way on your trailer would not work as the brake signals and turn signals wouldn't work correctly.
