Recommended Portable Flat Tow Braking System for the Easiest Install

Updated 12/08/2025 | Published 11/13/2025

Question:

I have a 2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid SE. Weight 3600 lbs. I want to flat tow behind my 2011 Phoenix Cruiser 2550 RV. What flat tow system would you suggest. It already had wiring installed for a car dolly braking system. I am going to have to be able to load this myself onto the RV so it needs to be light weight for me to lift. I am 75 yrs old and have no spouse to help.

Hey Lucinda. The easiest portable flat tow system to install in your 2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid SE is the Curt RVi Series 4 Portable Flat Tow Brake System item # RVI44FR. It weighs only 9.85 lbs and measures 16" long x 11-1/2" wide x 4-1/2" tall. After the initial setup all you'll need to do is put it on your floor board and press a button. The settings are saved.

Here are the rest of the parts you will need to flat tow your 2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid SE:

Tow Bar and Safety Chains - Blue Ox Alpha 2 Non-Binding Tow Bar - RV Mount - 2" Hitch item # BX7380 - weighs only 37 lbs

Base Plate Kit - Blue Ox Base Plate Kit item # BX2646

Would you be interested in a permanently installed breaking system for your Fusion? I know you said you wanted something light but with a permanent install you would only have to flip a switch when you're ready to go.

You can add this information and any other questions you have where it says Reply to Jerred H and I'll be happy to answer them.

Hey Lucinda, how did things go with the Curt RVi portable brake system and the Blue Ox setup for your Fusion? It sounds like the lighter weight options could make towing easier for you. Your update could help others looking for a simple, manageable flat tow setup.
