How To Pre-Heat Electric Steps On RV Motorhome In Alaskan Winter So It Doesn't Jam In Snow And Ice

Published 11/05/2025

Question:

Could I use the Heat Magnet to thaw a frozen RV step? It snows a lot out here in Alaska so anything helps to keep snow and ice from getting to the mechanism on my electric steps. It jammed last year and broke the dang gear!

Hey Shelly! Interesting idea there. It's not technically designed for that specific situation, but I don't see any reason why you couldn't do that!

The Zerostart Heat Magnet # ZE35MR works great for that kind of cold-weather fix. Just attach it to a flat steel part of the step frame or mounting bracket (anywhere on the bottom of the step away from the motor and wiring), and it’ll transfer steady 200-watt heat through the metal to melt ice and free up the moving parts. It’s a quick way to thaw things without blasting them with a torch or heat gun. Just be sure to remove the magnet before retracting or driving so it doesn’t get damaged. If it's not obstructing anything, you may be able to leave it attached when retracting the steps.

I wonder if you'd have better luck with the more slim silicone stick on option # ZE75MR that is permanent install (no need to remove it at all). I'm thinking I would lean towards this one!

What type of step system do you have - Lippert, Kwikee, or another brand?
