Question:

Id sometimes use it with the shelf, but other times want to use just the bike rack. Given the weight of it, published at ~140lbs, thats proabaly hard to move. can that be done, eg shelf comes off, and how? I looked at yakima exo and have the same problem, even more so. Other alternatives?

Hey Paul, the Saris MHS UNO Modular 2-Bike Rack with Cargo Carrier # SAR72MR that you referenced was designed to do exactly what you are looking. It can come apart easily to be used as either just a bike rack or a cargo carrier if you didn't need to have both at the same time. When it is just the bike rack it's essentially the part # SAR73MR which weighs 98 lbs.

There's silver clasps on the underside of the rack that allows the different sections to come apart pretty easily. What type of bikes do you have.
