Can The Pace Edwards UltraGroove Tonneau Cover PE39QJ Be Left Partially Open?

Updated 10/23/2025 | Published 10/22/2025

Question:

Can this bed cover be left partially closed/open and be ok? For instance I currently have a soft roll up and there is no way to keep it closed to my dog box when hauling hounds. I understand it would not be waterproof or locking but ?

Hi Bryan!

The Pace Edwards UltraGroove Retractable Hard Tonneau Cover - Aluminum and Vinyl - Matte Black # PE39QJ can be opened/closed in 12" intervals, so it doesn't have to just be fully opened or fully closed. I think this would be perfect for a dog box, but it may not go completely to the edge of said box. But it will probably be pretty close.

I have had a Pace Edwards cover on my Silverado since 2018 and it is still holding up quite well. I got the SwitchBlade so it's not as nice as this one, but I stand by the Pace Edwards tonneau covers. Just don't shove a book case into it when it isn't opened all the way. I sorta kinda maybe did that and slightly broke it, but it does still work. Just a little harder to open all the way now. : P

Are you using your hounds for hunting? If so, what are you hunting?

They are beagles, we do use them for hunting rabbits, and a small breeding operation. Thanks for your answer. Is there a link for the described cover?

@BryanW That's awesome! I had a buddy that had a couple beagles that he would hunt rabbits with. Was always fun to see them catch a scent and go into full work mode! They were little fury barking torpedoes. : ) The equivalent to what I have that fits your '26 F250 short bed is the Pace Edwards Switchblade Retractable Hard Tonneau Cover - Aluminum and Vinyl - Black # PE46QJ. It can kind of be opened not all the way, but if I brake hard it does end up opening up all the way. The strap to pull it closed could be tied off to hold it in place now that I think about it though. I might try that to see what happens.
