Best Weight Distribution Hitch For Travel Trailer With 10,000 lb GVWR

Updated 09/29/2025 | Published 09/06/2025

Question:

Good morning. I tow a travel trailer with a GVWR of just shy of 10,000 pounds. I tow it with a three-quarter ton diesel truck and I need a new set of weight distribution sway bars. What could you recommend for me? Thank you. Gary Peterson

Hey Gary, thanks for reaching out. We definitely have a good option for you. The correct weight distribution (WD) hitch completely depends on your loaded tongue weight. This is typically 10%-15% of the GVWR so yours should be in the 1,000 lb - 1,500 lb range. Basically each WD hitch has a range of tongue weights it will work with, and you want to be right within that range.

That said, what I recommend is the following:

- Strait-Line Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - No Shank - Trunnion Bar - 17K GTW, 1,700 lbs TW # RP66075

This is made for trailers with a tongue weight between 1,100 and 1,700 lbs, and your trailer should definitely be within this range. The Dual Cam system does a great job keeping the trailer aligned behind the vehicle. It is largely regarded as one of the best, if not the best, WD hitch on the market.

This WD system does not include a shank, and it is intended to be used with heavy-duty 2-1/2" hitch receivers. For example, the Equal-i-zer Weight Dist Shank # EQ90-02-4900 is for a 2-1/2" hitch and has a 10"/ 6" drop.

What size hitch receiver do you have? Have you ever checked the loaded tongue weight for your camper?

Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.
