Hitch for 2020 Subaru Outback with Best Ground Clearance

Updated 08/27/2025 | Published 08/25/2025

Question:

Im looking at hitch options for a 2020 Subaru Outback. Are there hitch options that have a minimal impact on ground clearance that dont require bumper removal during installation? Or do the hitches that install behind the bumper always leave more ground clearance? Thanks! Brian

Hey Brian, for a hitch with the best ground clearance for your 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon the Hidden Hitch part # DT74YR would be a really great option since the lower hitch opening is removable. This would require removing the rear bumper though.

The hitches like the Draw Tite # DT73RR that don't require removing the rear bumper don't offer as good of ground clearance since they will sit right under the rear bumper removing about 2.5 inches of ground clearance. Do you have a steep driveway where a hitch might drag?

Thanks for your reply. No steep driveway at home - more for pulling up a steep drive up to trailhead parking etc. My question was more about the difference between something like DT94YR and the # DT73RR you mentioned. Is there a difference in clearance there?

@Brian The hitch opening would be at about the same height between those two hitch when the Hidden Hitch lower assembly is installed but it has the advantage of not having a crosstube to either side of it that is at same height. Since it's completely in the center the chances of hitting it while turning into a steep hill are much lower as the crosstube corners of the other hitch would draw much sooner since that's how vehicles angle into inclines.
