Leaf Spring Recommendation for Single 3,500 lb Axle Converted to Tandem Setup

Updated 09/02/2025 | Published 08/09/2025

Question:

I currently have a boat trailer with a single 3500 lb axle. Boat weighs 2400 lbs. TaIler estimated at 600 lbs. I only tow it long distances and would like to convert the trailer to tandem axle for better handling and redundancy if a problem arrises while towing. What would you reccomend each axle be sprung at when it is a tandem. Could you please provide a materials list. Thanks. Dale

Hey Dale, I would go with a 2,000 lb rated spring like the etrailer part # e77SR if you were to switch to a tandem setup. This will still be more capacity than needed overall but won't be so overkill that ride quality suffers.

Then for a hanger kit the part # AP233-H248 would be a really great option that comes with everything you'd need to mount up a second axle and leaf springs.

To pick out a replacement axle though you would need to know the distance from hub face to hub face as well as the distance between spring seat centers.

Hey Dale, did you find the tandem axle setup to improve your trailer's handling and provide the redundancy you were looking for? I'm asking because your experience could help others considering a similar upgrade.
