Question:
Hi, I have a 5’x8’ landscape type trailer with a single axle. There are no markings on the trailer. I’d like to replace the springs. Can you tell me how I can figure out the weight for my axle? Thanks

Hey Matt, thanks for reaching out. Have you checked underneath the trailer to see if there is a tag or sticker on the axle? That is the best way to know the weight capacity. Without that it can be tough. If you can find a part number on the hub, we might be able to use that to find the weight capacity. Idler hubs should have a number cast on the back of the hub, so if you can provide that I am happy to look into it.
You could try measuring the axle tube diameter. That will help to narrow down the capacity, but is not enough to pinpoint an exact number. You could take the trailer to a weight station and weigh it if all that fails.
If you are needing new leaf springs, the best thing to do is jack up one side of the trailer and measure the current leaf springs when unloaded. Measure from center eye to center eye across. Knowing that length will really help narrow down your options, then if we can get the axle capacity, or even the gross weight of the trailer we should be able to get you a spring that will fit and work.
Let me know what you find out and I am happy to look into it and make a recommendation.
