Yes, Mike, the Napier Sportz SUV Awning - Large # NA99FR works well over an open hatch; it's actually not designed to be used with the hatch closed. You’ll open the trunk and slide the awning over it, then mount the awning to your crossbars (or use long strap to the hood if you don't have crossbars), and finally you'll stake out the poles slightly beyond it.
You get shade and access to your cargo area. There's also a mesh screen to keep bugs out if you are hanging out in the trunk area.
Just make sure the hatch opens smoothly under the awning angle.
If you plan to sleep in the trunk of the Outback, you'll have just enough room with the seats folded down to use the Napier Trunk/Truck Bed Air Mattress 75" x 42" x 5" # NA56FR. Let me know what you think!
