Natalie, the # NA99FR really does need to be anchored to something up top to create that angled shade. If you don’t have a rack, you might consider a strap to the hood or mount it between trees. But ideally, a roof rack or crossbars make setup much smoother.
If you want a stand alone option that doesn't require an SUV, I'd look at the Napier Sportz SUV Tent - 5 Person # NA49FR. This can completely disconnect from the trunk of the vehicle.
