What Roof Basket Should I Get for My Bean Trailer that has Crossbars that are 40" Apart?

Updated 09/08/2025 | Published 06/06/2025

Question:

I am planning to install this on top of my bean trailer. I have Thule crossbars with channels, but they are fixed at 40 inches apart, and I cannot move them any closer. Will Ino Sharper 100 fit and accommodate such a distance between the crossbars? The length is 46 1/2 inches, but does that mean that the mounting bracket screw can move as close as 3 1/4 inches from the end of the rack?

Hello Greg,

We definitely have a roof basket for you, it could be the Inno with modification, or a different one.

Since your spread is 40" apart, the Inno Shaper 100 Roof Cargo Basket - Channel Mount - Aluminum - 46-1/2" x 41-7/8" - 110 lbs # INXA569 is not going to be a good fit because it has a maximum crossbar spread of 36". The only way it would work is if you move one of the crossbars, and then seal up the holes from where it was attached.

I looked through a lot of cargo roof baskets, but I finally found one that will work with your 40" spread (if you choose not to move one of them) the Curt Roof Mounted Cargo Basket - 64-1/2" Long x 37" Wide x 4" Tall - 150 lbs # C18115-117 is quite a bit larger than the Inno, but it will work on a 22" to 50" crossbar spread.

What do you think you will do move a crossbar, or go with the Curt? Having the extra space up there might come in handy one day!

What has been your greatest adventure in your bean trailer?

Hey Greg, did you decide to move a crossbar or go with the Curt roof basket for your bean trailer? I'm curious because your experience could help others facing a similar decision.
