Troubleshooting Hydraulic Drum Brakes on a Boat Trailer

Updated 09/12/2025 | Published 05/25/2025

Question:

I own a 2004 magic tilt boat trailer that carries my 04 hunter 240 sailboat with drum brakes. I am the second owner so I dont know the history. I have had trouble with the right hand brake from the time I purchased it. Initially that cylinder was leaking. I purchased a new one from you and it stopped leaking. But now its locks up. I readjust the brake, significantly backing it off and after a few uses it tightens and begins to lock up. I also get a black brake residue out of this drum. It has a Titan master and flexible lines front to back. Where do I need to start looking as a root cause?

Hey Jeff, welcome back. Have you tried bleeding the brake lines or replacing them altogether? I do not think it's the actuator if the problem is only contained to one side.

It sounds like you have adjusted the new brake but I didn't see an order number that shows me which one you purchased. Here is the best way to tighten hydraulic drum brakes like item # AKFBBRK-35-D you were looking at. You'll want to use the Brake Adjustment Spoon item # W80630 at the plug in the back until you can't turn the hub/drum by hand and then back it off 10 clicks.

If you decide on replacing the lines, I recommend the Hydrastar Hydraulic Brake Line Kit - Single Axle item # HS496-251. This kit has a solid metal line running from the actuator to the back of the trailer, and then rubber lines to go from there to each brake.

If none of these steps work go ahead and send me a message in the comment box below and we'll take a look at the actuator.

Hey Jeff, did you have a chance to try bleeding or replacing the brake lines as suggested? I'm curious to know if that helped with the brake locking issue, as it could guide others facing similar problems.
