Will My Bike Rack with 6.5" Vertical Post Clear My Bumper Using Curt Hitch # C26VV on 24 Highlander?

Updated 10/28/2025 | Published 03/16/2025

Question:

I have a bike rack that bolts into a 2inch hitch. the bike rack has a vertical post that is 6.5 inches out from the bolt that must line up with the bolt hole in the hitch. Will that clear the back of the car or do I need to buy a hitch extension?

Hello Mark,

Since you’re using the Curt # C26VV hitch on your 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander, the distance from the hitch pin hole to the edge of the rear bumper is about 4 inches. Your bike rack’s vertical post sits 6.5 inches out from the hitch pin hole, which means you’ll have around 2.5 inches of clearance between the rack and your bumper. So you’re in the clear, no need for a hitch extension. The rack should fit just fine without making contact with the back of the car.

What kind of bikes are you transporting, and what kind of bike rack do you have?

Hey Mark, how did things go with your bike rack on the Curt hitch for your Grand Highlander? Did that 2.5 inches of clearance give you enough room behind the bumper? Your update could make it easier for the next person setting up a similar rack.

@KateF Yes. I was doubtful that you had a custom hitch for a Grand Highlander. I needed my son-in-law to help only because I don't have the strength anymore to hold it up AND screw in the bolts. But we fitted the hitch easily over the bolt holes in the frame and had it secure in less than 5 minutes. My bike rack clears the back of the car by about 3 inches. It all works fine. This is the 3rd hitch I have purchased from eTrailer and these have been easy to install, good online instructions, and you have the best price on the internet. thanks

@MarkD Thanks for the follow-up Mark, I definitely appreciate you taking the time! It is nice to have a helpful son-in-law, I am lucky enough that my daughter married a great guy as well =)
