Hi John; to install brakes on your trailer you will need hub/drum assemblies, brake assemblies, a 7-way, and a breakaway. You can add a 7-way using the # HS381-9000 and for a breakaway use the # 3802308. To make the rest happen you will need to start by identifying the trailer axle. Can you send me a picture of the axle tag? Also, you need to see if the axle has a brake flange. If it does not, you either need to replace the axle with one that does or have an axle shop weld on a brake flange.
If you only have a 4-way on your 2017 Subaru Outback you will also need the # ETBC7 to upgrade to a 7-way. You can use a brake controller like the # TK94FR but I wouldn't recommend it. Instead, I would install the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED52VR. This brake controller is simple and reliable with an OEM look. The main unit installs behind the dash so only the control knob is visible. The knob controls the brake power and acts as the manual override.

Hey John, how did things go with adding trailer brakes for your Outback and trailer setup? Were you able to identify the axle and check for the brake flange? Your update could make it easier for others working on a similar light-duty trailer.
