Comparing the Curt Spectrum, Tekonsha Voyager iD, and Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Brake Controllers

Updated 10/31/2025 | Published 02/04/2025

Question:

I have a 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 with factory tow package. Look at the options for a dial controller. I see these 3. Can you tell me the pro and cons between these 3 units. Curt Spectrum Trailer Brake Controller vs Tekonsha Voyager iD Brake Controller vs Redarc

Hey John, thanks for reaching out!

Before I dive into it, I just want to throw it out there that the Curt Spectrum # C36QV, Tekonsha Voyager iD # TK86DR, and the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # RED65CR are all great brake controllers and you'll be happy with any of them. My input is just from my experience of comparing the controllers and the feedback we've received from other customers using them.

Ultimately if I had to go with a brake controller it would be the Tow-Pro Elite # RED65CR because it offers a wide range of mounting possibilities, and it has normal proportional braking as well as "off-road" mode which is essentially is the older time-delayed style. The time-delayed style is "outdated" but is actually still useful if you'll be going off-road or towing in some more challenging terrain like over mountains.

The Tow-Pro Elite falls short in the warranty department since it's only backed by a 2-year warranty as opposed to the lifetime we see with the Spectrum and Voyager iD. With that being said, Redarc is a company based in Australia and they produce really rugged products and we have yet to see any issues with this controller (and we've carried it for a number of years now).

My only problem with the Spectrum is the size of the control knob. It's basically the same size as any other control knob on your dash/console area so I would be afraid to accidentally move the brake controller when I'm trying to adjust the air or something like that. Some people may like the larger control knob though so that is really just preference.

The Voyager iD is brand new to us (this is written in Feb 2025) and while Tekonsha has traditionally been a really solid brake controller company, a few years ago they were bought out by a parent company, and this is the first controller they have come out with since that transition took place. The parent company didn't do a great job with the initial transition so I'm basically waiting to see if this controller has the same high-quality and reliability as it would have had under previous management. My hopes are high, but it's still just something to consider.

Hopefully this helps shed a little light on the controllers and what to expect. Please let me know in the comments below if you have any other questions about any of them!

Hey John, how did things turn out with the Voyager iD brake controller on your Silverado? I’m curious if the performance and reliability met your expectations. Your feedback could help others comparing these same options.

@JonG The Voyager iD brake Controller worked awesome. It functions great and I have had no issues with it. The install was easy and clean. Here is a picture of where I installed it and how clean it looks. https://photos.app.goo.gl/qMsHHcpNoDd7zSLb6 None of that larger block hanging down at your knees.
