Question:
Hi there! I’m looking to set up my 96 Toyota Tacoma for trailer brakes. I already have a 4 pin installed but I need a brake controller and install kit. I was looking at the tekonsha pod and prodigy v2. Do you have any opinions on why I shouldn’t get the pod since it’s more affordable? Thanks!

Hey Callie, thanks for reaching out. We do have an install kit for your 1996 Tacoma as well as brake controller options.
For the install kit, use the Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7. This comes with everything you need to upgrade your current 4-flat connection to a 7-way, including all of the necessary wires for a brake controller. The diagram below will show you typical installation for the # ETBC7 kit, and you will also find an install video linked below.
For the brake controller, you certainly can use the Tekonsha POD # TK56ER, although this would not be one of my top recommendations. This is a time-delayed controller, meaning when you hit the brake pedal, there will be a 3-4 second delay until the trailer brakes apply. This is more of an old-school design. It can work well for low speed towing, like pulling a farm trailer around your property. Or if you just need to get a trailer from point A to point B one time, it is a good affordable option.
If you plan to tow more frequently, or for longer distances, I encourage you to go with a proportional controller over a time-delay. I know they are more expensive, but a proportional controller will provide much smoother braking and easier driving. Proportional controllers apply the trailer brakes in brakes in direct proportion to the vehicle brakes. So instead of chucking and jerking you get smooth proportional braking. Our most affordable proportional controller is the Tekonsha BRAKE-EVN # TK28BR. If you think you will be using the controller often, it will be worth investing in.
Feel free to reach out and comment below if you have any questions or if you need anything else.

Hey Callie, how did things go getting the ETBC7 kit and brake controller set up on your Tacoma? Did you end up going with the Tekonsha POD or the BRAKE-EVN for your towing setup? Your update could make it easier for others deciding between those two options.
