Question:
a friend has a Curt class 11 hitch for the 2006-2014 Toyota Rav 4. He wants to give it to us to use. Will it fit on a 2006 Toyota Avalon?

Expert Reply:
The Toyota RAV4 can be equipped with either a 1-1/4-inch Class II or 2-inch Class III hitch, while your 2006 Avalon is suitable only for a light-duty Class I hitch such as those one of those shown on the link provided. Unfortunately, your friend's hitch is not suitable for use on your vehicle.
Light duty Class I hitches have specific weight limitations; for example, a hitch-mount bike rack for a Class I hitch can carry only 2 bikes maximum, regardless of the capacity of the bike rack itself. I have linked an article on hitch classes that will explain in detail. The Curt Class I hitch # C11427 is the most popular unit for your vehicle.
If you do choose one of the Class I hitches offered and you do intend to tow, you might refer to the two linked articles: one concerning hitch installation tips and the other on towing in general. If a bike rack is in your plans the other link will show you compatible 2-bike Class I bike racks, including the excellent Thule EasyFold E-Bike rack # TH903202. This rack is designed for heavier electric bikes, and it's packed with lots of beneficial features that you can see in the linked video.
