Is There a Way to Haul My 153 Pound Scooter With My Curt Hitch Class 1 with 1 1/4" Receiver?

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/29/2024

Question:

I have a 18 Toyota Camry XSE with a hitch that has 350 tongue capacity and 3500 towing weight with a 1 1/4. Would it be safe to use an adapter to change to 2 for a scooter carrier with the scooter weighing 153 and carrier 90 pounds.

Hello Darrell.

I see that you did this question on the # C13315 page, that hitch is for the 2013 - 2025 Mazda CX-5 and is a class 3. The correct hitch for the 2018 Toyota Camry is the # C11576, this hitch has a tongue weight of 200, and towing of 2,000 as it is a class 1 which is why it has the 1 1/4 receiver. By using an adapter like # e43YR it will cut your tongue weight in half taking it down to 100 pound tongue weight.

We do have another option that might work, a cargo carrier that goes directly into a 1 1/4" receiver, the Curt # C18110. It is 19" X 47", I am not sure the size of your scooter, but hopefully this will work for you.

Hey Darrell, how did things turn out with the cargo carrier for your Camry? Did the 1-1/4 inch Curt carrier end up working for your scooter setup? Your update could make it easier for others looking to haul similar gear.
