How To Size Your LP Gas Regulator

Updated 11/29/2024 | Published 11/28/2024

Question:

Thank you for this expert help feature on your website. do you have anyone on staff who can assist me with sizing an LPG regulator for a dual fuel portable generator? I’m considering a unit that includes a manufacturer’s supplied LPG hose kit. The hose kit which includes a regulator is limited to only 6 feet of hose and a max 40 propane tank. I would like to install a 420 propane tank with about 15 feet of hose. If you are able to assist me, I’ll forward the technical details that the manufacturer shared with me regarding the generator requirements in order to appropriately size a regulator. Thank you for your time and consideration. I’ll look forward to your reply.

Hey Jim,

This sounds like you're trying to connect to a residential ASME tank. That equipment that we offer more so designed for smaller RV tanks and wouldn't be the best option for what you're needing. You'll want a regulator from your local hardware store that's meant for this style tank and usage. The important factors here are fitment (what style/size fitting), BTU rating, and Water Column (W.C). Water Column is essentially just another word for the amount of pressure placed on the line. The BTU rating is the amount of "fuel" that can pass through under this pressure.

For example, the # 37207-30395 is set to 11" W.C. and has a 345,000 BTU Btu per hour rating. You'll want to check what the water column and BTU rating requirements are for your appliances (generator) to see what size regulator would be the best option.
