Updated 01/12/2026 | Published 09/03/2024

Question:

1997 four Winns 200 Horizon boat on single axle four Winns trailer. Hub assembly broke off completely and wheel fell off. Hub still attached to the tire. Does have the surge brake also. Which part is replacement? I believe a 2950 lbs dry weight boat. Thanks in advance

Hey Eric,

If your trailer hub just fell off that means either the bearings exploded and allowed enough room for the hub to slip past the spindle nut, the spindle nut ate the threads off the spindle up or vibrated off, or a combination of everything. I would clean up your spindle with a shop towel and some brake cleaner and examine it for any gouges or scratches where the bearings and seals sit (this space is called a journal). If you have any damage to these journals the axle is trash and you'll need to replace it.

If you lucked out and the spindle isn't damaged then you'll just need to measure the spindle at points B, C, and D with a caliper # PTW80157 so we can see what bearings fit. I'll also need to know the axle capacity and bolt pattern for the wheel to match it. I'm assuming you have a 3,500lb axle with a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern but I'd prefer to confirm.

Hey Eric, were you able to measure the spindle with the caliper and check for any damage on the journals? Knowing what you found could help others dealing with a similar trailer hub issue.
