Troubleshooting Pop & Lock for 2018 Honda Ridgeline Not Working Properly
Updated 09/17/2024 | Published 09/02/2024 >
Question:
I had a pop and lock tailgate lock installed in my 2018 Ridgeline about 7 years ago. Now it is making some noise but not opening the tailgate. I opened up the tailgate and checked using a 9 volt Duracell battery and it still will not open it. All it does is make some funny noises then tries to extend the arm, but doesnt budge more than an 1/8 of an inch, shivering and shuddering while it is doing it. What is wrong? Can I just replace the actuator? Thank you.

Try checking the spring on the lock bolt assembly of your Pop & Lock Custom Tailgate Handle # PL8675 (see attached photo) to make sure it isn't broken. If that hasn't broken then it's possible the actuator has failed but that's pretty uncommon according to my contact at Pop & Lock.
If you try throwing the lock bolt assembly back and forth by hand and it's difficult and requires some force to move the lock then the actuator is the problem.

Ordered a new actuator as well as a manual release from you guys last week. Got it, installed it and all is well. Don't believe what those guys from Pop and Lock told you. From what I have read, and opened up the insides of the actuator, failure is more common than you are led to believe on this device. When I ordered the new actuator from you guys, I went with the manual release handle as well, which in my books, should be MANDATORY, as it can be a dangerous situation when you have the tailgate not being able to open up AND you have a live animal inside a crate inside the trunk bed on a hot day trying to get the dog out! Took my wife hours to rescue our dog because of the failed actuator. There should be a mandatory manual release sold with every Pop and Lock because of this stupid design! Other than using a metal saw to cut through the tailgate when this happens, there is no way to open up the tailgate when the actuator fails. Your service with the order, on the other hand, was exemplary as well as your videos! Please pass along this information to the Pop and Lock makers.
