Troubleshooting Prodigy Brake Controller Not Working with Brakes of Carson Equipment Trailer

Updated 09/18/2024 | Published 08/30/2024

Question:

Hi! I know that my controllerprodigy and dodge ram truck are not the problem as I tow several other trailers w/o this problem. When towing Carson 20ft equip trailer, The controller lights, that display the braking level numbers, flash. They continue to flash as long as brakes are applied, regardless of what the display reads or changes. In addition, on occasion, the controller shows a light application of brakes when no brakes have been applied. Both, only occur when moving. All lights including brake lights work. Thank you!

Hey Marlene, if you have the original Prodigy brake controller that has the red numbers then it sounds like the problem you are having is that your trailer has hydraulic brakes and your controller is not compatible with them. What you would want to do is upgrade to the P2 part # 90885 which has a hydraulic mode and would work just fine once put in hydraulic mode.

If your controller does have blue numbers then I would make sure you try putting it in hydraulic mode as that is most likely the issue.

Otherwise try cleaning the pins of the 7-way as that can easily cause this problem.

Hi Jameson, thank you for your reply. Perhaps I should’ve given more information. I have owned this trailer for 25 years and have successfully hooked it up to my Dodge since 2006. I can assure you that the brakes are not hydraulic. The problem is a recent one any ideas? I appreciate your help

@MarleneB Have you tried cleaning the pins of your 7-way with sandpaper? Usually problems like this that pop up the issue is some corrosion or dirt has accumulated on the pins that needs to be removed.
