Brake Controller Recommendation for 2005 Chevy Suburban

Updated 08/26/2024 | Published 08/21/2024

Question:

A severely worn and damaged BigTex 14ET came into my possession, with much work, effort and and helping hands of others, a breath of new life is in this trailer. I have a 2005 suburban with a 2500 frame. Someone removed the factory tow package, the 7 pin connector and hitch are newly restored but on a budget and without guidance, there’s seems to be an urgent demand to get this trailer into service without delay. I’m not wanting to do damage to the fully restored trailer or continue pulling the loads it seems to be meant to pull. Considering the times I’m like many and doing the best that I can with what I have. Im driving way under the speed limit to prevent possible crashes when I must tow. Any Guidance or alternative means of controlling my trailer brakes for my current pickle I’m in would be much appreciated. Warm Regards, Benjamin T. Cox SR.

Hey Benjamin, the only way to control the trailer's brakes (assuming they are electric) is by installing a brake controller in your 2005 Chevy Suburban.

To do that on a budget the best option is the Tekonsha Primus IQ part # TK49HR which comes with custom wiring for the controller to fit your Suburban. This is a solid and safe brake controller that also doesn't break the bank.

Equipment trailers like what you have often times have surge brakes so if that's what it has you wouldn't need anything to operate the brakes.
