Determining The Correct Weight Distribution Hitch For A 2018 Chevy Silverado Towing A 20' Trailer

Published 08/13/2024

Question:

Hello. I have a 2018, Silverado, 4x4 double cab, 3.42 diff. I bought a trailer that is 20 feet over all and 3550. I assume I need a sway bar system. Can you recommend one?

Hey Jesse,

To find the right weight distribution hitch for your setup you'll want to weigh the tongue weight while the trailer is fully loaded. You can do this with a tongue weight scale or you can take the trailer to a highway weigh station and have just the truck on the scale and measure it with and without the trailer connected to determine the tongue weight.

Once we know what your tongue weight is I can pick out a weight distribution hitch to match your setup and provide some sway control.

@Jesse At that tongue weight I recommend the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control # EQ37060ET. This hitch has a tongue weight capacity range of 200lbs - 600lbs with an overall GTW capacity of 6,000lbs. Equal-i-zer has one of the best hitches for sway control because it has 2 friction points per spring bar to keep the trailer tracking straight behind you. I've attached a link to a short video below where brad will walk you through the installation process.

@KevinC sorry, the website crashed while I was working on my responses, wouldn’t RE94FR work? It’s a fraction of the price.

@Jesse The Reese Pro Round Bar Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control # RE94FR has a 500lb - 800lb tongue weight capacity range so the spring bars would be too stiff, giving you a bad ride quality and/or will over-distribute the weight forcing more onto the front axle. If you're wanting something more in that price range then you could go with the lower capacity # RE34FR. It's the same hitch with lower capacity spring bars (300lb - 600lb).
