What Info Is Needed to Pick Out Replacement Trailer Axles

Updated 01/19/2026 | Published 08/08/2024

Question:

I have tandem axles on my travel trailer. They are stamped AL-KO. They painted numbers on axles are: T4485/68. They are 4400 axles. I was told these axles, and all replacement parts, are obsolete. Are there replacement axles of the same dimensions? I believe my wheels are 6 on 5.5.

You will be able to get replacement axles for what you have but we don't carry them. What you need to take to a local trailer shop who can order in axles is the capacity you need, the distance from hub face to hub face on the axle, and the distance between the spring seat centers.

Hey, were you able to find replacement axles after checking with your local trailer shop? Knowing what worked could help others trying to replace older AL-KO axles.

@JamesonC Yes. I found a local axle manufacturer (Freidl Axles, Corona, CA) and had them build me two axles to specs. Their axles are very similar as Dexter axles. These axles were built to the same specs of my OEM AL-KO Axles. The only change I made was went with 6000# axles instead of the 4400# ALKOs. I know this does not change my GVWR, but the new axles provide stronger axles tubes, heavier springs, and larger brakes. I also added the MORryde wet bolt kit (etrailer Part # MR46ZR) and MORryde Equalizers (etrailer Part # MR87ZR) to complete the install. Axle manufacturer used double lip grease seals and Lucas Red N Tacky grease for bearing grease (my personal choice). After install I burnished the brakes. All is well so far and the MORryde suspension upgrades provide and much smoother towing experience.
