Can 235/85/R16 Tires Be Used to Replace 235/80/R16 Tires

Updated 02/03/2026 | Published 07/24/2024

Question:

Hello! I have two big horse trailers that I am replacing the tires on. They are lt235/85r16 tires. I am replacing with st235/85r16 because it was recommended that for the load I haul on a normal basis it’s a safer choice. My lt235/85 tires are not in bad shape at all… which brings me to my question. I have a big voltage camper with 6 tires that are completely shot. It doesn’t trailer very much. The tires are st235/80r16 I know the 80s are a different diameter than the 85s but if I replaced all 6 tires with the 85s from the horse trailer, would that work?

Jill, since the 235/85/R16 tires are about an inch taller than the 235/80/R16 tires you'd just need to make sure you have the appropriate clearance in the wheel well. If you have the clearance, then yes you're good to upgrade those tires to the larger size, but if not then you wouldn't be able to.

Hey Jill, how did things go with swapping the 235/85R16 tires onto your camper? Were you able to confirm that you had enough clearance in the wheel wells? Your update could make it easier for others thinking about a similar tire change.
