Hoist System Idea for Getting Kayaks on Top of Motorhome

Updated 02/18/2026 | Published 06/10/2024

Question:

Greetings. Do you have a complete solution to hoist a kayak to the top of a motorhome/RV? Roof top is about 10 high. Kayak weights 60 lbs, measures 18 long x 30 wide x 15 high. The hoist post would need to be either removable or could be folded down when travelling. Would need to be able to use it on either side of the motorhome maybe a hoist post base fixed on both sides of the roof, and hoist post inserted on whichever side the kayak will be hosted. The kayak would be secured either flat on roof rack cross-bars, or on J-racks.

Hey Roger, thanks for reaching out!

I really like the idea that you have, but the only thing we have is the Malone Kayak Hoist # MPG346, and that's only part of what you're needing. I've never heard or seen something with the design that you're wanting, but you might be able to rig something up using the Malone Hoist I mentioned above.

Be mindful about how much height you'll be adding to your motorhome. A lot of times they are set at just the right legal height so you need to make sure you aren't exceeding that.

Hey Roger, did you end up trying the Malone Kayak Hoist for your motorhome setup? I'm curious if it gave you a workable way to lift and secure your kayak. Your results could really help others looking for a similar hoist solution.

@RobinH Actually, we have not decided yet. We compromised and only took our inflatable SUPs. Thanks for following up! Regards, Roger
