Great question. I have owned one of these Bulldog Portable Air Compressors # BDW41004 for a while now. I can tell you that the default PSI setting is 30 PSI. So you will not have to go all the way from zero each time you use it. Once you set it to 32 PSI it will remain at that setting until it is disconnected from the power source. With the length of the power cord, and the air hose, you can easily set the PSI once and fill all four tires.
I have not noticed the compressor getting hot at all when I have used it. That said, when I do use it, it is only running for maybe 3-4 minutes at a time, and it has been rather cold lately here in Missouri. If you were to use it in much warmer conditions, and allow it to run for the max duty cycle of 10 minutes, the compressor would be noticeably warmer. Is does have two padded handles on top so you can still handle the compressor even if it is slightly warm. I do recommend setting the compressor on the ground, and not on the floor inside the car, just to be safe.
