There is a way to get a system with a bike rack that can be converted to a ski rack. This is called the EXO system from Yakima, and it's a base with arms that allows you to mount different accessories; the base even swings away for easy access to your vehicle's hatch (if your car has a hatch, of course). Here is what you can use:

The EXO and bike rack come together, but when you aren't using the bike rack you can just remove it and put on the ski carrier.
