Do I need to close the tailgate first before the cover is snapped down in place?

You would need to lock the TruXedo Pro X15 Soft Tonneau Cover # TX1472001 in place before closing the tailgate of your 2016 GMC Sierra 2500. You won't be able to get the cover to latch in place with the tailgate closed, which also adds a bit of security because no one will be able to open the cover if you lock the tailgate.
