Question:

Im hauling a 40-pound eBike on a Raxter platform rack with a two-inch square shaft. Have been using a two-inch hitch bought from eTrailer on a Mazda CX-5. Now I need to install a hitch on a 2017 Chevy Bolt EV to carry the same bike on same rack. I already own an adapter to take the two-inch shaft down to 1 1/4. Im wondering how stable the bike would be on a 1 1/4 hitch. I do travel on twisty roads quite a bit, and some forest roads too. Will 1 1/4 be OK? Price is important. Thanks!

Price does play a pretty important role when choosing a trailer hitch, but for your application you really need to use the EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver # 306-X7359 for transporting your e-bike with your 2017 Chevy Bolt EV.

When you use an adapter, like the 1-1/4" to 2" Adapter # e43YR, you'll be reducing the weight capacity of the hitch by 50%. This is due to the extension causing more exaggerated movement since it sits further out. So not only will the weight rating of the hitch be cut in half, but there will be more movement on an already weak Class I hitch receiver.

I know the EcoHitch isn't the most cost-effective, but it's the best choice to protect your vehicle, your bike, bike rack, and those traveling around you - especially if you're going to be driving over rough terrain.
