Question:
I am looking at a Thule rack for a 2017 Subaru Outback Touring with flush rails, and the suggestion is to use the 47inch bars. Is it possible to use the wider 53inch bars on this vehicle, which might add more attachment space on the bars for accessories?

I have a longer crossbar roof rack solution for your 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon Touring with flush rails but since the Evo Wingbars mounting slot on the bottom of the bar where it attaches to the feet of the rack is not very long a longer bar would not work. If the slot ran the full length of the bars it would be possible but since it does not you are limited to using the 47 inch bar with this setup.
Instead we have the Yakima HD roof rack part numbers # Y01156, # Y64AR, # Y03541, # Y32CR that is a confirmed fit and has 55 inch long crossbars. This will give you the additional bar space you are wanting and will for sure fit.
